Tumu (UW/R), July 29, GNA – The Sissala East Municipal Assembly has disbursed GH¢280,000.00 from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) to 45 persons living with disabilities (PWDs) to support their economic activities and improve their livelihoods.
The support package also included 48 bags of fertiliser for six PWD farmers, five goats each for 12 beneficiaries, weedicide, and funding to procure a tricycle motor tanker for one beneficiary.
The latest intervention follows an earlier first-quarter distribution of GH¢249,062.00 to 42 PWDs in the municipality.
Addressing beneficiaries at a brief ceremony in Tumu to present the items, Mr Adamu Yakubu, Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), urged them to put the support to productive use to improve their living conditions and become economically self-reliant.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of persons living with disabilities and assured them that they would continue to be prioritised under social protection interventions outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 election manifesto.
Mr Yakubu encouraged the beneficiaries to use the resources responsibly to create sustainable livelihoods for themselves and their families.
Mr Nuhu Alhassan, Sissala East Municipal Social Welfare Officer, urged the beneficiaries to invest the resources wisely to multiply them and establish sustainable sources of livelihood.
Mr Alhassan Huaru, Presiding Member of the Sissala East Municipal Assembly, commended the government and the Assembly for increasing the disability share of the Common Fund from three per cent to five per cent.
Mr Huaru, on behalf of Assembly Members, urged the Social Welfare Department to extend its outreach to remote communities to identify more deserving PWDs who were yet to benefit from the intervention.
Some beneficiaries who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) expressed appreciation for the support and pledged to use it to improve their lives.
Mr Yakubu Sumaila, one of the beneficiaries, said the initiative would significantly improve his household’s upkeep and promised to make productive use of the asset.
