Yendi (N/R), July 24, GNA – Scores of mourners gathered at the forecourt of the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Friday to observe the seventh-day Adua (prayers) for the late Ya-Na Abukari II, Overlord of the Dagbon Traditional Area.
The mourners included delegations from government, political parties, traditional authorities and people from across the country, who converged at the palace to sympathise with the Dagbon Kingdom and pay their last respects to the late Overlord.
Government officials and political leaders, in separate remarks, urged the people of Dagbon to maintain peace and unity during the process of selecting a new Ya-Na.
Mr Ali Adolf John, Northern Regional Minister, who led the Government delegation, conveyed the Government’s condolences to the bereaved family and the people of Dagbon.
He appealed to the people to remain calm, peaceful and united, and to cooperate with kingmakers throughout the process leading to the selection of the next Ya-Na.
Mr John stressed that sustaining peace and stability in Dagbon was crucial to the continued development of the traditional area and the Northern Region.
Mr Salifu Saeed, Political Advisor to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, conveyed Dr Bawumia’s condolences to the family of the late Ya-Na and the people of Dagbon.
He also called for calm and unity, urging all stakeholders to work together in the interest of the kingdom during the selection of a successor to the late Overlord.
The seventh-day Adua forms part of the traditional mourning rites observed following the death of a Ya-Na and offers an opportunity for sympathisers from across the country to pay their respects and offer prayers for the peaceful repose of the deceased.
