Cairo, July 5, (dpa/GNA) – A freighter sailing in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen, has reported coming under armed attack, an organization that monitors shipping reported on Sunday. “A cargo vessel has triggered a distress alert stating that they are under attack by unknown armed assailants.
Authorities are investigating,” the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre reported. It located the incident as 30 nautical miles (55.6 kilometres) south-west of the Yemeni port of al-Hodeidah, and issued an advisory to ships to transit with caution. No further details were provided.
The Iranian-backed Houthi militia controls the north and west of Yemen, including the capital of Sana’a and al-Hodeidah. During hostilities between the United States and Israel on one hand and Iran on the other, the Houthis have in the past attacked Israel.
They have also mounted a blockade of shipping linked to Israel in the Red Sea, attacking dozens of ships since 2023 and even sinking some.
