Nkawie (Ash), July 23, GNA – A total of 45 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) have been provided with start-up items and funds totaling GHS 293, 000.00, at Nkawie in the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality of the Ashanti region.
Out of the number, 32 got financial assistance through cheques amounting to GHS 111,500.00, while the rest benefitted from nine deep freezers, eight three-in one Ice Chest, a wheelchair, sizeable polytank (a water storage container) and laptop computer.
Under the financial assistance, 20 beneficiaries received GHS 60,000.00 as start-up capital to establish and expand their businesses and vocational enterprises, whilst eight received GHS 21,500.00 to support their educational expenses including school fees at rehabilitation centers, hostel accommodation and other related educational costs.
Four of them also received GHS 18,000.00 to cater for medical treatment and healthcare needs and GHS 12,000.00, went to the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, to support advocacy and organisationaldevelopment activities in the Municipality.
Mr Wisdom Osei Boamah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) at the ceremony, said the interventions were not merely acts of charity but were strategic investments in human potential.
He said when PWDs were provided with the needed resources, skills and opportunities, they became active contributors to the economic growth and social development of the society.
He, therefore, urged the beneficiaries to utilise the resources responsibly and productively to improve their income and standards of living.
“Let the equipment and financial support you received become instruments for creating sustainable livelihoods, improving your standard of living and inspiring hope within your communities”, he stated.
He explained that the primary objective of the fund as captured under section seven of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) Act, 1993 (Act 455), was to reduce poverty among PWDs especially, those outside the formal sector of employment, while enhancing their social and economic well-being through dignified and productive livelihoods.
He disclosed that the GHS 293,000.00 received for the disbursement represented the third and fourth quarters of the year 2025.
He said, the Municipal Disability Fund Management Committee (DFMC) was therefore working towards its disbursement to deserving beneficiaries.
Nana Yaw Akuoko, the Otumfuo Asinhene, who chaired the function, commended the government for the increase of the fund and its timely release to serve its intended purpose.
