Hohoe (V/R), July 30, GNA – Madam Eureka Abbey, an Entrepreneur and Programme Lead for Goshen Star Foundation, has called on parents to cultivate the habit of reading at the early stages of their children.
She said developing such a habit-built knowledge of their children and prevented any difficulties they might face with regards to reading when they were grown.
Madam Abbey, speaking during the 8th Durbar of Excellence and Community Service of the Momo Montessori Academy in Hohoe, said reading helped children to gain wisdom.
She said while parents were busy with chores, they could engage their wards to read to help them have an idea about their progress.
Madam Abbey urged parents to get involved in the welfare of their wards to enable them to identify their challenges and assist with remedies.
She said reading improved the knowledge of children, enhanced their vocabulary, help them to read and write, and enhanced brain functioning.
Madam Abbey called on the learners to continue to make use of the library to build upon their reading habit.
The occasion was themed: “Igniting a love for reading; fueling futures one book at a time”.
Mrs Comfort Honu-Agbley, the Proprietoress of the Academy, said the importance of cultivating a passion for reading in young learners highlighted how reading could open doors to new worlds, ideas and opportunities setting the foundation for lifelong learning and personal growth.
She urged parents to be good examples to their children and also put their phones away and take a storybook and read it out to their children.
Mrs Honu-Agbley called on them to create reading time at home and encourage them to read.
“Supervision is most effective when your television or phone is away while they read in a quiet environment,” she said
She said children needed mentors, teachers, coaches, grandparents and a strong community, adding that healthy families and communities built healthy support systems.
Madam Honu-Agbley said the Academy’s community service would be at the Children’s Ward of the Volta Regional Hospital, Hohoe with the hope to inculcate compassion in the children in the school.
