Sunyani, (Bono), July 9, GNA – Mr Isaac Badu Amponsah, the Bono Regional Director for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has urged members of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to report service providers who charge illegal fees to the Authority.

He said co-payment or collection of illegal fees undermined the NHIS, warning that health facilities who would be found wanting would be investigated and prosecuted accordingly.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Amponsah said that collecting illegal fees from members of the NHIS amounted to stealing.

“There isn’t any co-payment in Ghana”, he stated, and assured members of the scheme that any money collected from them illegally would be refunded.

Mr Amponsah said the NHIA was working hard to sanitize the NHIS and called for public support to curb the collection of illegal fees.

He said the NHIS was making a significant impact on the health system in the Boo Region and expressed the optimism that the region would be able to exceed the 2026 registration target of 1,372,986.

He said so far, the NHIS had about 927,178 active members in the region and urged the service providers to submit their claims on time.
