Yunyoo (NE/R), July 26, GNA – The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has engaged men and boys in 11 communities in the Yunyoo-Nasuan District to strengthen their role in promoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (ASRHR) and preventing gender-based violence (GBV).
The sensitisation programme formed part of a two-week outreach activity implemented by the NCCE in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with funding support from Global Affairs Canada.
The initiative aimed at encouraging positive behavioural change and fostering safer communities.
The beneficiary communities were Yunyoo, Mozio, Jimbali, Nasuan, Tema, Sitik, Namong, Kufuk, Gbamkurugu, Gunguna and Gbungbani.
Participants received practical information on adolescent health, respectful relationships, positive masculinity and the prevention of GBV as part of efforts to improve awareness and understanding of issues affecting adolescents and vulnerable groups.
The outreach programme, which formed part of the NCCE’s second-quarter activities on ASRHR and GBV prevention, sought to strengthen community participation in addressing harmful practices that negatively affect adolescent health and well-being.
It also aimed at increasing the involvement of men and boys as key partners in promoting gender equality and protecting the rights of adolescents.
The programme further enhanced participants’ knowledge on GBV prevention, respectful relationships and positive masculinity, while encouraging them to challenge harmful social norms and cultural practices that expose women, girls and adolescents to abuse and discrimination.
Participants were urged to work closely with traditional authorities, community leaders and relevant state institutions to identify and report cases of GBV to ensure timely intervention and justice for survivors.
The facilitators emphasised that men and boys had a critical role to play in creating safe homes and communities through the promotion of mutual respect and the rejection of all forms of violence.
