Ministry urges gender equality in child development

Accra, July 29, GNA – The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has urged parents and guardians to provide equal opportunities for boys and girls to support their development.

The Ministry said eliminating practices that restricted children based on gender was essential to enabling them to learn, develop and realise their full potential.

Madam Pearl Peters, Head of the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Unit of the Ministry, made the call at a Knowledge Sharing Session on the ECCD Policy organised by the Human Resource Management Directorate (HRMD) for its staff in Accra.

She said every child deserved equal opportunities to grow and benefit from interventions that supported their overall development.

Madam Peters explained that the ECCD Policy was designed to promote the holistic development of children through coordinated interventions in health, nutrition, education, protection and social welfare.

She identified the four key domains of child development as physical, cognitive, socio-emotional and language development, noting that children’s wellbeing during the early years provided the foundation for lifelong outcomes.

Madam Peters said the holistic development of children was a shared responsibility requiring collaboration among parents, caregivers, communities, institutions and other stakeholders.

Mr Henry George Ekuban, Deputy Director of HRMD, said the session formed part of the Directorate’s staff development programme aimed at increasing awareness of key national policies and building the capacity of officers for effective service delivery.

He urged participants to apply the knowledge gained to support the effective implementation of the ECCD Policy.
