Accra, July 19, GNA – The Judiciary and Greater Accra Regional Bar Association have held a float, health walk and legal outreach at Makola Market to educate traders on family law issues.
The events formed part of the Supreme Court’s 150th anniversary celebration under the theme: “Honouring the past, celebrating the present and defining the future.”
Justice Richard Adjei‑Frimpong, a Supreme Court Judge and Chairman of the Anniversary Committee, told the media that the outreach focused on spousal property rights, child custody and related matters because of recent public concerns.
“These are matters that we should put on the front burner to let the public know and get education on these matters. We must look for the opportunity to do more for the public and enhance education as well,” he said.
Justice Adjei‑Frimpong noted that the Supreme Court belonged to the public and needed to bring its activities closer to citizens.
“When we planned these anniversary programme, we decided we will engage the public. The Supreme Court has lived in seclusion for far too long and therefore this is an opportunity to open‑up to the public.
“We are engaging with the public because we want them to be part of the celebration. It is their Supreme Court, and therefore 150 years, we have to find a way to make them a part of it,” he said.
On the health walk, Justice Adjei‑Frimpong said the Judiciary would consider regular exercise for members, noting: “A sound mind lives in the sound body.”
Justice Henry Kwofie, also a Supreme Court Judge, said it was important for members of the Judiciary to remain physically fit.
“Everybody needs to be active. We are always sitting down due to the nature of our work. We want to be active, move around and flex our muscles,” he said.
Mr Samuel Afotey Otu, President of the Judicial Staff Association of Ghana, said staff should be encouraged to engage in regular exercise, adding that health walks had been incorporated into monthly programmes.
The walk began from the Supreme Court through Accra Sports Stadium, Ridge roundabout, Holy Spirit Cathedral, Assembly Press and Electricity Company of Ghana to the Ghana School of Law.
Lawyers also interacted with traders at satellite markets including Kwasia Dwaaso and Makola within the Central Business District.
