Gunmen kill high-ranking local official in north-eastern Afghanistan

Islamabad, July 28 (dpa/GNA) – Gunmen assassinated a senior Taliban government official in Afghanistan’s north-eastern province of Badakhshan on Tuesday, the Afghan Ministry of Information and Culture said.

In a statement, the ministry said Zabihullah Amiri, the director of information and culture for Badakhshan province, was attacked by two armed men while returning from Baharak district to the provincial capital, Fayzabad city.

Amiri’s security guards returned fire, killing one of the attackers and detaining the other, the ministry said, adding that an investigation was under way.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Badakhshan has witnessed recurring unrest and previous attacks targeting Taliban officials. In 2023, Islamic State Khorasan (ISKP) claimed responsibility for a car bombing that killed the province’s deputy governor.
