Accra, July 23, GNA – Government has reaffirmed its commitment to equitable access to quality healthcare, announcing progress in the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Policy.
Presenting the 2026 Mid‑Year Fiscal Policy Review in Parliament, the Finance Minister, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, said the policy launched in April marked a major step towards universal access to essential services, particularly for vulnerable and underserved communities.
He said the first phase was being implemented in 150 underserved districts nationwide to improve access regardless of income or geographical location.
“Government remains committed to ensuring that every Ghanaian has access to quality primary healthcare as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s health system and improve health outcomes,” he said.
To support the rollout, the Minister revealed that more than 24,000 pieces of medical equipment had been distributed to enhance diagnostic services, emergency response, maternal healthcare and neonatal care at primary facilities.
Investments were also made to improve delivery in difficult‑to‑reach communities, with motorbikes, tricycles and mobile outreach equipment deployed to extend services to remote populations.
Dr Forson said community‑based screening programmes for hypertension, diabetes, cancers and other non‑communicable diseases had been expanded to promote early detection and treatment.
Health kiosks and container‑based health posts were being established, alongside upgrades of existing facilities, to strengthen frontline infrastructure.
Dr Forson said the interventions formed part of the government’s broader strategy to build a resilient and inclusive healthcare system capable of delivering affordable, accessible and quality services to all Ghanaians.
