Accra, July 23 – The family of the late Founder and Leader of the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana, Apostle Professor Emeritus Ing. Kwadwo Safo, has accused his daughter, Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo, of allegedly demanding GH₵3.7 million, before the burial of their patriarch can proceed.
In a statement issued by the KRISTO Asafo family to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, the family described the demand as “outright extortion and a clear attempt to hold the body of the late Apostle Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo hostage.”
The family said, Madam Safo, in a letter dated July 21, 2026, sent through her lawyers, described the GH₵3.7 million as cost for the “initial preparation” towards the funeral.
It laid out a series of engagements, that broke down on: June 4, 2026: when Madam Safo wrote to the family lawyer requesting a meeting to “cooperate and resolve the funeral matters amicably,” stating that “customary law is quiet and orderly.”
The family alleged that after the meeting date was fixed, Madam. Safo did not attend, but she subsequently held a press conference announcing burial and funeral dates of July 30 and 31, 2026.
The statement said, “On July 21, 2026, a second letter was sent through her lawyers expressing a desire “to cooperate with the family towards the funeral.”
The statement said the family claimed the same correspondence contained the GH₵3.7 million demand, adding that a follow-up meeting was not granted after the family responded.
It further stated that following the reading of the Will, an action they say Madam Safo initiated, custody of the body and funeral arrangements were vested in Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, the son of the late Apostle.
It said following the reading of the Will, it became clear that no agreement existed with Madam Safo on funeral arrangements, and therefore the family declared all funeral dates previously announced by her as “null and void” and “hereby put on hold indefinitely.”
“The body of Apostle Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Safo shall be laid to rest with the dignity he earned in life, not held for ransom by anyone,” the statement read.
The statement said, the lawful custodians of the burial rites were Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena and the Aduana Kotoko Royal Family of Essumeja and indicated that new dates and a “befitting burial programme that honoured the legacy of the Founder” would be announced in due course.
It urged the public and members of the Kristo Asafo Mission to “disregard any further announcements emanating from Madam Adwoa Safo and to treat the monetary demand with the contempt it deserves.”
The family said it issued the statement to “set the record straight and to provide the needed information to the public and members of the Kristo Asafo Mission.”
Meanwhile, Madam Sarah Adwoa Safo has not publicly responded to the allegations.
Apostle Prof. Kwadwo Safo was a renowned inventor, industrialist, and religious leader.
His passing has drawn national attention, with tributes pouring in from across Ghana.
