Eco Restore advocates integration of indigenous tree planting into school programmes

Tamale, July 16, GNA – Eco Restore Ltd, a Tamale-based landscape restoration organisation, has called for the integration of indigenous tree planting into school programmes to instil environmental stewardship in children.

Dr Peter Lovett, Co-Director of Eco Restore Ltd, who made the call, said engaging pupils in the planting and nurturing of indigenous tree species would help cultivate a culture of environmental conservation and encourage future generations to appreciate the ecological and economic value of Ghana’s indigenous trees.

He made the remarks in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Tamale.

Dr Lovett proposed that every school organise at least one annual tree-planting exercise during which pupils would plant and care for indigenous tree species throughout their years of schooling.

He said the initiative would not only improve the country’s tree cover but also inspire children to encourage their families to cultivate more indigenous trees.

“Children, who grow up planting and caring for trees will better appreciate the environment and become ambassadors for conservation in their homes and communities,” he said.

Dr Lovett noted that integrating indigenous tree planting into school programmes would help raise a generation that values the country’s natural heritage and actively contributes to the restoration of degraded landscapes.

He added that exposing children to practical tree-growing activities from an early age would complement classroom learning and deepen their understanding of the importance of protecting Ghana’s environment.
