Colombo, July 6 (dpa/GNA) – At least 25 prisoners and guards have been killed, and more than 75 injured inside a high-security jail near the capital Colombo, in one of Sri Lanka’s most serious outbreaks of prison violence, authorities reported on Monday.
The clashes first erupted on Sunday between two groups of inmates at the Negombo Prison, located about 30 kilometres north of Columbo. The violence resumed on Monday, police said.
Among the dead were 20 inmates and five prison guards. Police and military forces have been deployed to restore order.
Authorities said the initial confrontation broke out between two groups of detainees, held on narcotics-related offences.
