Somanya (E/R), June 11, GNA – Mr. Francis Addo Akumatey, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly, has handed over educational furniture to the Ghana Education Service (GES) for distribution to schools across the municipality.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr. Akumatey said the initiative fulfilled another commitment of the government of John Dramani Mahama and underscored his dedication to improving educational quality by ensuring that no child has to study while sitting on the floor.

He disclosed that the Assembly allocated 10 per cent of its 2025 budget to procure more than 400 pieces of furniture for schools within the municipality.

The MCE further announced plans to procure and distribute an additional batch of furniture by the end of 2026 to address persistent shortages. He urged the GES to maintain the furniture properly to prolong its lifespan and benefit future generations of students.

Mr. Akumatey emphasized that the use of the furniture would be closely monitored to promote a strong maintenance culture and ensure durability.

Mr. Solomon Sackitey, Public Relations Officer of the Yilo Krobo Municipal GES Directorate, said the items supplied included mono and dual desks, hexagonal kindergarten tables with chairs, as well as teachers’ desks and chairs.

According to him, the consignment comprised 220 mono desks, 124 dual desks, 70 teachers’ tables and chairs, and 52 hexagonal tables, each accompanied by six chairs, bringing the total number of chairs to 312.

Mr. Sackitey expressed optimism that the municipality would receive similar or larger quantities of furniture in future distributions, alongside additional classroom infrastructure.

He also revealed that the construction of one kindergarten block, one primary school block, and one junior high school block is scheduled to begin this year. Construction work is already underway at schools in Korboe Okumka and Klo-Agogo Presbyterian School.

He noted that these projects would help ease overcrowding and address the municipality’s ongoing classroom and furniture shortages.

The PRO assured that the GES would closely supervise the use of the furniture to prevent damage. Schools would also be encouraged to use capitation grants and mobilize support from Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) and local communities for maintenance and repairs.

He added that all schools, including Somanya Technical Institute, would benefit from the distribution, covering communities such as Somanya, Oterkpolu, Klo-Agogo, and surrounding areas.
