Bolgatanga, June 25, GNA – The North East Regional Health Directorate has honoured its former Regional Director of Health Services, Dr Braimah Baba Abubakari, for his transformational leadership and outstanding contributions to healthcare delivery in the region.

Dr Abubakari, who led the region’s health sector from September 2023 to April 2025, was presented with a Citation of Honour in recognition of his role in strengthening and advancing what the Directorate described as a “young and evolving health system.”

The citation was presented during a joint Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health Strategic Planning Meeting involving the Upper East, North East and Northern regions in Bolgatanga.

According to the North East Regional Health Directorate, Dr Abubakari’s tenure was characterised by strategic leadership, purposeful innovation and an unwavering commitment to improving healthcare services across the region.

The citation highlighted his ability to leverage strategic partnerships to expand access to frontline healthcare and noted that he successfully sustained the KOICA Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Project while overseeing the establishment of three new CHPS compounds.

One of his most notable achievements, according to the Directorate, was the innovative use of existing infrastructure to address critical supply chain challenges.

The citation commended his foresight in transforming an underutilised facility into a functional temporary Regional Medical Stores, a move that significantly enhanced logistics and supply chain management across all districts in the region.

The Directorate noted that beyond infrastructure development, the region recorded steady improvements in key health indicators during his tenure.

It said that through robust supervision, accountability and effective stewardship, Dr Abubakari translated national health policies into measurable local successes.

“Under his guidance, the North East Region achieved continued improvements in service delivery, coverage and performance indicators,” the citation stated.

It added that his leadership helped consolidate previous gains and influenced the implementation of new public health initiatives.

The Directorate further acknowledged Dr Abubakari’s strong commitment to staff development and institutional strengthening.

Management recalled that during his 19-month tenure, he created opportunities for health personnel to upgrade their skills through local and international training programmes, fostering motivation, teamwork and a shared sense of purpose among staff.

Management also described him as a champion of decentralised and inclusive governance, noting that he consistently engaged members of the Senior Management Team in critical strategic decision-making processes.

According to Management, this collaborative approach enhanced institutional stability and promoted a culture of mutual respect, accountability and shared responsibility.

Expressing profound gratitude for his service, the Directorate stated: “Your legacy is evident in the strengthened systems and innovative solutions that continue to support healthcare delivery across the North East Region.”

The citation further noted: “May your legacy of service continue to inspire excellence, integrity and compassion in public health leadership.”
