Lume Avete (V/R), June 26, GNA – A huge mahogany tree at Lume Avete in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region was uprooted during a torrential rain that struck parts of the community on Thursday afternoon.
The fallen tree damaged some buildings and property, although the full extent of the destruction was yet to be determined.
Mr Daniel Gidi, Akatsi South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), appealed to residents to remain vigilant whenever weather conditions appeared threatening and to take precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.
Officials of NADMO were at the scene assessing the extent of the damage and gathering information to guide possible intervention measures.
Mr Jacob Nyasorgbor, Assembly Member for the area, called for calm and collaboration among residents as authorities worked to rectify the situation and support affected persons.
Residents said the storm was accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, causing fear and panic among community members.
No casualties had been reported as of press time, while authorities continued to monitor the situation.
