Nkyeraa, (Bono), June 2, GNA- A philanthropist, Mrs. Grace Jemima Antwi, has handed-over 300-bed capacity girls’ dormitory to the Nkyeraa Senior High School (SHS) in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.

Hitherto, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) learnt that both the male and female students of the school shared the same dormitory block.

Mrs Antwi and her family constructed the facilities furnished with ceiling fans, student beds and mattresses and has 19 standard washrooms and recreational hall at the cost of GH¢3.85 million.

Attached to it are two residential apartments for the teachers.

Additionally, Mrs. Antwi offered scholarships to five students who excelled in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSE) in the area to further their education.

Mr Kwasi Frimpong, a relative to Mrs. Antwi, a native of Nkyeraa, a farming community, handed over the keys of the facility to the school authorities at a ceremony held at Nkyeraa, near Wenchi.

“A few years ago, Mrs. Antwi visited and interacted with the school authorities who appealed for the facilities,” he recounted.

Mr Frimpong noted that the government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of improving quality education in the country and called on stakeholders to contribute towards addressing challenges facing the school.

He advised the management of the school to maintain the facilities and urged the students to use them properly, asking them to remain studious and to achieve high academic laurels.

Mrs Veronica Amponsah, the Headmistress of the Nkyeraa SHS, expressed appreciation to the donors, saying, “the gesture will forever remain in telling the history of the school.”

She said the school was one of the least endowed second cycle institutions in the region confronted with several challenges including inadequate classrooms and lack of teachers’ bungalows.

“For years now our students have had no decent dormitories,” she lamented, and appealed for more support towards improving the physical infrastructure and academic environment of the school.

Mrs Amponsah also appealed to the Wenchi Municipal Assembly and Alhaji Seidu Haruna, the Member of Parliament for the area to lobby for the school to benefit from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) projects, pledging to ensure that the facilities were well maintained.
