Sunyani, (Bono), June 12, GNA – Mr Yaw Eric Atanga, the Bono Regional Organiser of the National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana (NUTUG), has advised tricycle owners to ensure that they engaged only licensed riders to use their machines.

He said as the union engaged the government for the regularisation of tricycle operations as passenger fee paying transportation in the country, there was the need for the tricycle owners to also contribute towards ensuring sanity on the road.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani, Mr Atanga, also the Sunyani Municipal Chairman of the NUTUG, appealed to the government to expedite action for the regularisation of their operations.

He said the use of tricycles had numerous economic benefits, saying that besides picking passengers, their activities also provide job opportunities for the youth.

Mr Atanga, also known as Ben Jesus, also entreated the tricycle owners not to only think about their profits, but also consider the safety of the users.

He said it was an offence to allow minors to ride the machines, saying that riders, 21 years and above, could use the machines.

Mr Atanga mentioned that hikes in fuel prices and the high cost of spare parts had compelled the union to increase fares and urged the users to cooperate with the fare increment.
