KMA to reintroduce enhanced ‘samansaman’ sanitation system from July 1

Kumasi, June 9, GNA – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has announced the reintroduction of what it has termed the “Enhanced Samansaman System” effective July 1, 2026, as part of renewed efforts to improve sanitation conditions in the metropolis.

In a press statement issued by its Public Relations Unit, the Assembly said a special sanitation task force comprising environmental officers, military, and police personnel would be deployed to selected communities across the city to enforce environmental laws and bye-laws.

The task force is expected to operate from 0800 hours to 1100 hours on each working day, and the Assembly warned that offenders would be hauled immediately before a court of law for prosecution.

The KMA also announced that the next Sanitation Day would be held on Saturday, July 1, 2026, within the Abrepo Electoral Area, and would be led by the Assembly Member for the area.

The Assembly used the statement to call on the public to keep their surroundings clean at all times and to support efforts aimed at improving the overall sanitation condition of the city.

“The public is hereby called upon to keep their surroundings clean at all times and to bear the date of the next sanitation day in mind, while supporting the Assembly to improve the sanitation condition of the city,” the statement said.

The “Samansaman” system, which translates loosely as a community cleanliness enforcement exercise, has previously been used by the KMA as a tool to crack down on environmental offenders and compel compliance with sanitation regulations within the Garden City.

The reintroduction of the initiative signals a firmer stance by the Assembly on sanitation enforcement, coming at a time when rapid urbanisation continues to pose significant challenges to waste management and environmental hygiene in Kumasi.
