Karpowership Ghana wins two top honours at 2026 HESS awards

Accra, June 29, GNA-Karpowership Ghana Company Limited has won two prestigious honours at the 2026 Health, Environment, Safety and Security (HESS) Awards, in recognition of its outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability and operational excellence. 

The company received the “Best Environmental Protection Campaign Award” and the “Best Company in Environmental Management Practices Award,” affirming its leadership in environmental stewardship and sustainable business operations. 

A statement issued in Accra by the Company said the awards recognised organisations that had distinguished themselves through innovative environmental initiatives, sound environmental management systems and consistent compliance with national and international environmental standards. 

It said the recognition reflected its unwavering commitment to protecting the environment while delivering reliable and sustainable electricity to support Ghana’s energy sector. 

The company operates an environmental management system that complies with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). 

The statement said the system ensured that the company’s operations consistently met both local regulatory requirements and internationally accepted environmental best practices. 

As part of its environmental management strategy, Karpowership Ghana undertakes continuous monitoring of air quality, noise levels, effluent discharge and sediment quality to minimise the environmental impact of its operations. 

It said the company also implements comprehensive waste management systems, effective chemical control procedures and efficient resource management covering fuel, lubricants, water and energy consumption. 

In addition, it monitors greenhouse gas emissions, conducts regular environmental performance assessments, organises environmental awareness and staff training programmes, and promptly addresses any environmental non-conformities identified during operations,” it added. 

Its environmental sustainability efforts are further strengthened through stakeholder engagement, public environmental awareness campaigns and corporate social responsibility initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable development within its host communities. 

Ms Sandra Amarquaye, the Communications Manager of Karpowership Ghana, said the awards reflected the company’s commitment to responsible operations while ensuring reliable power supply to the country. 

“Environmental stewardship is embedded in every aspect of our business, and we are proud to meet both local and international environmental standards. This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our employees and the strong collaboration we enjoy with our regulators, partners and host communities,” she said. 

Ms Amarquaye said the company remained committed to continuously improving its environmental performance and contributing meaningfully to Ghana’s sustainable development agenda through responsible and sustainable operations. 

She said Karpowership Ghana dedicated the awards to its employees, regulators, partners and host communities, whose continued support and collaboration have contributed significantly to the company’s success over the years. 

The latest recognition adds to the company’s growing list of achievements at the HESS Awards, having previously won honours for Best Company in Fire Safety Management and Best Company in HESS Integration, reinforcing its position as a leader in health, environment, safety and security management in Ghana.
