Zambia’s broadcasting regulator issues guidelines on election coverage

LUSAKA, May 26 (Xinhua/GNA) — Zambia’s broadcasting regulator, on Tuesday released guidelines for a fair, balanced and responsible broadcasting of this year’s general elections.

Webster Malido, director-general of the Independent Broadcasting Authority, said in a statement that the guidelines were developed to provide practical direction on the coverage of elections and election-related matters, as well as to strengthen professionalism, fairness and ethical conduct during the electoral process.

“The guidelines provide greater clarity on the responsibilities of broadcasters during the electoral period, and seek to strengthen compliance with broadcasting standards,” he said.

According to him, the regulator will monitor election coverage across all broadcasting stations, and ensure compliance with the guidelines and applicable broadcasting regulations throughout the electoral period.

Zambia will hold elections on Aug. 13 to elect a president, members of parliament and local government leaders.
