Accra, May 18, GNA – Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, has expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their role in the successful hosting of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championship, despite challenges encountered during the competition.
The championship concluded on Sunday at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, with closing activities disrupted by torrential rains but athletes were determined to compete for the last laurels of the games.
South Africa finished top of the medal table with 20 medals, comprising nine gold, three silver and eight bronze medals, while host nation Ghana finished with five medals, including one silver and four bronze.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr Adams said the tournament’s success was the result of collective effort and resilience.
“Few days ago, we gathered here for one dream, one purpose. Like any international competitions, there were challenges along the way, there were moments that tested our resolve and our endurance. What defines us is our ability to rise together, solve all challenges together and move forward,” he said.
The Sports Minister, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana, also extended condolences to the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) following the death of its President, Mr Hamad Kalkaba Malboum.
Mr Adams described Mr Malboum as a figure who had dedicated his life to the growth of the athletics on the continent.
The Sports Minister thanked the Local Organising Committee, technical officials and volunteers for their contributions, noting that the volunteers demonstrated the spirit of Ghanaian hospitality during the event.
He also acknowledged the support of sponsors and called on more corporate organisations to invest in athletics to sustain its growth.
The Minister congratulated all athletes who participated in the championship, regardless of whether they won medals, saying their performances would inspire the next generation of athletes across Africa.
“I want to thank President John Dramani Mahama for the immense support and guidance to ensure the successful hosting of the tournament,” he added.
