Police search Berlin’s Tempelhofer Feld for person carrying weapon

Berlin, May 28, (dpa/GNA) – Berlin police have been deployed to the city’s Tempelhofer Feld park, following reports of someone carrying a weapon, authorities said on X on Thursday.

A helicopter has been deployed and 100 officers are searching the vast airfield-turned-public park, after someone was spotted carrying a weapon or “an item resembling a gun,” a police spokesman said. Some access points to the park have been closed due to the operation, police said.

However, visitors are still able to leave the park through all exits, it said. Tempelhofer Feld is a former airport in central Berlin that was converted into a public park in 2010. It is popular with locals and tourists alike, offering a vast space for walking, cycling, barbecuing and other activities.

Several beer gardens, a circus tent and an urban garden are located in the park, which is surrounded by a fence and closed after sundown.

A mosque and a public pool are located outside the fence on the park’s northern, end while parts of the former airport building are used to house refugees.
