Tamale, May 16, GNA – Mr Mahama Abdul-Fataw, Tamale Metropolitan Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has urged students to play active roles in the fight against corruption and poor governance in the country.
He said students, as future leaders, had a responsibility to uphold integrity, accountability and transparency both in school and in their communities.
Mr Abdul-Fataw made the call during an engagement forum organised by the Tamale Metropolitan Directorate of the NCCE under the “Strengthening the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption in Ghana” project.
It was supported by the German Development Cooperation Agency (GIZ) and the European Union and attended by students and teachers at the Business Senior High School in Tamale.
Mr Abdul-Fataw encouraged the students to become ambassadors of good governance and ethical conduct, saying corruption remained one of the major challenges affecting the country’s development.
He urged them to report any suspected cases of corruption to the appropriate authorities for the necessary action to be taken.
He said institutions such as the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Police and other anti-corruption bodies were available to protect and support citizens, who reported corrupt practices.
Mr Azumbawini Salifu Eliasu, a Tutor at the Business Senior High School in Tamale, commended the NCCE for organising the engagement.
He said the fight against corruption and the promotion of responsible governance must begin at the school level by inculcating discipline, honesty and civic responsibility in students.
He noted that educating students on issues of corruption would help shape them into responsible citizens capable of contributing positively to national development.
Mohammed Salamatu, a student participant, said the engagement had enlightened her on the importance of reporting suspected corrupt activities in communities.
She added that she was now confident to speak up to expose wrongdoing in society knowing that the State supported citizens, who exposed corruption through the whistleblower act.
