Kikam (W/R), May 11, GNA – Residents of Kikam and Asemko in the Ellembelle District have been urged to participate in an upcoming hypertension screening and awareness programmes as part of the celebration of this year’s World Hypertension month.

Mr. Paul Kodwo Kwaw, the Assembly Member for the Kikam and Asemko Electoral Area, who made the call at Kikam, said the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Directorate in Ellembelle would roll out community outreach, public education, blood pressure screening, and media engagements throughout the month of May.

He said the initiative forms part of a global campaign led by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness on the prevention, early detection, and control of high blood pressure.

This year’s celebration is under the theme: “Measure Your Blood Pressure, Control it, Live Longer.”

Mr. Kwaw advised residents to take the exercise seriously, stressing that hypertension often showed no symptoms, and early detection was crucial.

He urged the public to check their blood pressure regularly, reduce salt intake, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, avoid harmful alcohol use and smoking, take prescribed medication, and attend regular hospital reviews.

The Assembly Member also encouraged residents to manage stress effectively and adopt healthier lifestyles.

The campaign is being spearheaded by the Ellembelle District Health Directorate.
