Sunyani, (Bono), May 5, GNA – Fire has gutted the premises of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Sunyani and caused extensive damage to sensitive machines and equipment at the state broadcaster.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) learnt the inferno occurred on Monday May 4, 2026, around 1300 hours, but the rapid response of the personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) saved the situation.

Nonetheless, the station’s inverter and panel room were badly affected, with the fire destroying solar power equipment.

The Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One (ADOI) Kwame Adomako, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the GNFS who confirmed the incident told the GNA that the personnel arrived on time and managed to control the fire from extending to parts of the station.

He said no casualty was recorded and investigations were on-going to ascertain the actual cause of the outbreak.

Mr Samuel Mensah, a Broadcast Assistant Engineer at the GBC told the media that the fire sparked shortly after he had completed a routine inspection at the panel and transmitting rooms, saying that solar panel batteries and the station’s inverter system were badly affected.

He explained that the inverter system converted solar energy from direct current to alternating current for operational use.

He said the damage would affect digital terrestrial television as transmission might be disrupted temporarily.
