Apolonia, April 29, GNA – A rainstorm that struck Apolonia in the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality of the Greater Accra Region on Tuesday has destroyed several homes, shops and parts of school buildings, leaving more than 10 people injured.
The storm, which began at about 1340 hours on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, was accompanied by strong winds that ripped off roofing sheets and caused extensive damage across the community.
Mr Dennis Tettey, Assembly Member for the area, told the Ghana News Agency that the incident had caused widespread destruction, rendering several residents homeless.
“The rain did not last long, but the accompanying winds were very severe and left many people without shelter,” he said.
Mr Tettey said the injured persons, including a two-year-old child, had been taken to nearby health facilities and were responding to treatment.
He added that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant authorities had been contacted to provide urgent assistance to affected residents.
Preliminary assessments, he said, indicated significant damage to property, with many families displaced and in need of immediate relief support.
The Assembly Member also refuted reports of fatality, clarifying that the individual earlier reported dead was receiving treatment at a health facility.
He appealed to government agencies, benevolent organisations and the public to support victims with relief items as recovery efforts begin.
Mr Abraham Tetteh, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Coordinator of NADMO, confirmed the incident and said a team had been deployed to assess the extent of the damage.
He noted that additional support might be required to adequately respond to the situation, adding that the Municipal Chief Executive had been informed and was on his way to visit the affected community.
