Sunyani, (Bono) April 28, GNA-The Right Reverend Kwaku Effah, the Methodist Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese has advised the Church to refrain from discourses about the biblical tithing controversy that hit the church recently.

He said the leadership of the Methodist Church Ghana had peacefully resolved the “tithing controversy” urging the church to stop the debate.

The bishop’s advice followed a viral video involving a member and a priest of the Church concerning tithing which has since sparked widespread discussions on social media and other traditional media platforms.

Addressing the 47th Annual Diocesan Synod of the Church in Sunyani said: “We are aware of the debate surrounding the payments of tithes which emanated from the Church, and I appealed to the church and the public to cease the debate”.

The synod was on the theme: “Walking in the word: Equipped for every good work”.

Rt Rev Effah said the Diocese swiftly intervened when the controversy erupted, saying that, “The church’s leadership have met with the member and the Reverend Minister involved and the matter has been resolved amicably”.

He noted that prolonged public debate on the incident could dent the image and reputation of the Methodist Church in general, a situation that could distract the church from its core mission of evangelism and humanitarian and social services.

Rt Rev Effah emphasised the Church’s dedication to deepening spiritual growth of the members and appealed to the media to be circumspect in their reportage, guarding sensationalism and rather help propagate the spread of the word and advance the Kingdom of God.

“Preaching the word of God will transform our society”, the Methodist Bishop state, he stated.
