Nkwanta (O/R), April 29, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched a fire safety awareness campaign ahead of this year’s International Firefighters’ Day, with a strong call on the public to desist from attacking firefighters during emergency operations.
Assistant Divisional Officer I, Prince Essel Junior of Nkwanta South Municipal Fire Service Division, during a media campaign, condemned the growing trend of hostility from some community members during rescue missions, describing such actions as dangerous and counterproductive.
Mr Essel also highlighted the importance of safety measures in communities, saying the only fire tender stationed in Nkwanta South serves Nkwanta South and Kadjebi District, which has a limited capacity of 700 gallons of water.
Despite these constraints, firefighters continue to respond promptly to emergencies.
However, he lamented that instead of supporting their efforts during fire outbreaks, some recalcitrant residents resorted to attacking personnel and, in some cases, damage essential equipment.
The Assistant Divisional Officer urged the public to cooperate with them and support their work to ensure effective emergency response.
He also advised residents to adopt preventive fire safety measures, including switching off all electrical gadgets when leaving home and engaging qualified electricians for proper wiring.
Mr Essel emphasized that collective responsibility is key to preventing fire outbreaks and safeguarding lives and properties.
This year’s celebration is under the theme “An attack on firefighters and equipment is an attack on public safety, support and protect the firefighter.”
The climax of the celebration will take place on May 4.
