Fire at GRIDCo’s Akosombo Substation disrupts power supply in parts of Ghana

Tema, April 24, GNA — A major fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) Akosombo Substation in the Eastern Region has disrupted operations, affecting power supply in parts of the country.

The incident occurred at about 140:1hours on Wednesday, April 22, leading to interruptions in power generation and transmission and resulting in outages in some areas.

A press statement issued by GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Section and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said emergency response teams had been deployed to the scene and were working tirelessly to assess the situation and initiate immediate remedial actions.

It said a comprehensive evaluation was underway to determine the extent of the damage and to enable technical teams to commence processes to restore normal operations as swiftly as possible.

The statement assured the public that GRIDCo’s technical teams were actively managing the situation, with efforts focused on stabilising the power system and minimising disruptions.

It added that further updates would be provided as more information became available.

The company urged the public to remain calm, assuring that the situation was under control.

GRIDCo is responsible for the transmission of electricity from power generation sources to distribution companies across Ghana and parts of the West African sub-region.
