Accra, April 25, GNA – The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Benard Ahiafor, has been endorsed to serve as a member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s (IPU) Resolution Drafting Committee.
The endorsement by the African Geopolitical Group followed his nomination by Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament and President of the African Geopolitical Group of the IPU.
A press release issued by Mr David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations at the Parliamentary Service, and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Saturday, said Mr Bagbin also nominated the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa to the Committee.
It said both nominations received unanimous endorsement from members of the African Geopolitical Group, reflecting strong confidence in their leadership and contributions.
According to the release, on the sidelines of the 152nd Assembly of the IPU held in Istanbul, Türkiye, Mr Bagbin held a series of bilateral meetings with delegations from Australia, Algeria, Belgium, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, the Kingdom of Morocco, Qatar, Türkiye and Ukraine.
The statement said the high-level engagements focused on strengthening economic cooperation, enhancing parliamentary diplomacy, and deepening collaboration in key areas including trade, investment and regional development.
It noted that discussions also underscored the importance of African solidarity in addressing shared challenges such as security concerns, economic resilience and sustainable development.
The release said the engagements reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to fostering strong international partnerships and advancing collective efforts towards peace, stability and prosperity across Africa and beyond.
