Techiman (Bono East) April 18, GNA- Mr Kingsford Opoku Gyamfi, the Bono East Regional Director for the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says about 64 percent of the region’s population is active on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

He said the scheme had registered 880,000 out of the about 1.3 million people in the region, saying that the NHIA was working hard to achieve the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.

Mr Gyamfi disclosed this when speaking at the first quarter review meeting of the Authority at Techiman, saying that the NHIS targeted to enroll about 80 percent of the region’s population by the end of 2026.

He said the NHIS remained the surest programme to bringing quality healthcare services to the door-steps of the people, and urged those who had still not registered to do so to access quality healthcare delivery services.

Mr Gyamfi said he was hopeful that with the implementation of the Primary Healthcare Programme, the nation would achieve the UHC, and urged stakeholders support for the sustainability of the programme.

He expressed concern about co-payment, explaining that the NHIA and stakeholders were working hard to stem the co-payment which impeded the implementation of the NHIS.

Mr Gyamfi said the NHIS was undertaking free registration under the free primary healthcare programme between April 15 and April 31, 2026 and urged the people to take advantage and register to benefit from the programme.
