Accra, March 23, GNA – The Ghana Police Service as clarified that a viral video showing a child being abused online did not occur in Ghana but in Nigeria.
A press release copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday said the Police, through the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET), investigated the footage after it surfaced widely on social media.
“After thorough investigations by the CVET, the Police wish to state that the incident occurred in Nigeria,” it said.
It explained that the disturbing footage showed a man, identified as Odukaye Kunle, assaulting his young son, Boluwatife, during a domestic dispute.
The incident reportedly took place at 16 Popoola Street, Oko Baale in Ado Odo Otta, Ogun State.
The video captures the horrific scene of Kunle venting his anger on his innocent son.
“The toddler is seen attempting to approach his father with affection, seeking a hug, when Kunle suddenly hit him with shocking intensity, landing him (toddler) on the ground,” the release said.
This act of love from Boluwatife contrasts sharply with his father’s uncontrollable anger, leaving viewers heartbroken and enraged.
The video sparked widespread outrage, with many social media users tagging the Ghana Police Service and CVET, prompting swift verification.
The release said the Nigeria Police Force had since arrested the suspect, who was expected to face charges in court.
The confirmation was shared by the Force’s Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, via X.
It added that the child and his mother had been taken to a police medical centre in Otta for evaluation and care.
The Ghana Police Service commended the public for their concern and vigilance, and assured that it would continue to collaborate with citizens and international partners in the fight against crime.
