Washington, March 23, (dpa/GNA) – President Donald Trump said Monday, that the United States and Iran had reached agreement on around 15 points of a potential deal.
“They will never have a nuclear weapon. They’ve agreed to that,” Trump told reporters in Florida.
He repeated an earlier statement that “very strong” talks had been held with Iran and said, there are “major points of agreement, I would say, almost all points of agreement.”
Trump said the two sides would probably speak by phone later on Monday.
He added that the US was not negotiating with the country’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, but with the person that he believes is the most respected figure in Iran.
Both Washington and Tehran want to strike a deal to end the war, the US president
emphasized.
Earlier on Monday, Trump wrote on Truth Social, that he was postponing his threat of military strikes on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for five days, due to “productive conversations” with Iran.
However, Iran swiftly rejected Trump’s claim that the two sides have been engaged in negotiations to end the war, launched by the US and Israel.
On Saturday, Trump had given Tehran an ultimatum to fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, or face large-scale attacks on its power plants.
