Washington, March 17, (dpa/GNA) – US President Donald Trump, told reporters on Monday that he does not believe Israel would use a nuclear weapon to solve its problems, even though the Jewish state has never admitted to possessing the deadly weapons.
Asked by a reporter about a comment Trump adviser David Sacks made in a podcast, in which he speculated that Israel might escalate the war and consider using a nuclear weapon, Trump said: “Israel wouldn’t do that. Israel would never do that.”
Israel has for years pursued a policy of deliberate ambiguity, in order to avoid confrontations over its nuclear programme. Senior Israeli politicians have repeatedly emphasized that Israel would not be the first Middle East country to possess nuclear weapons.
According to estimates by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Israel possesses 90 nuclear warheads.
