Pasoro (Ash) March 03, GNA – A traditional ruler has stressed the need to provide decent accommodation for teachers in the communities in which they work.
Nana Okofo Badu Marfo, Chief of Pasoro, a farming community near Barekese, in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti region, who stated this, said teachers aside their core mandate of imparting academic knowledge, discipline and helping to shape the character of children, play significant roles in communities in which they worked.
It was, therefore, important to provide them with decent accommodation to enable them to stay in the communities to play socio-cultural roles and serve as role models to young people in their communities.
Nana Okofo Badu Marfo, was speaking at a fund-raising durbar organised by the chiefs and people of Pasoro to support the construction of a four-bedroom apartment for teachers posted to the community.
He said besides the development agenda of the government, citizens had to contribute their quota by supporting the provision of the needed social amenities such as the teachers’ accommodation for the sake of their own children.
He said, the teachers needed accommodation for a sound sleep and a peaceful rest of mind to enable them to prepare adequately to help shape the knowledge, future, and entire life of the children.
Nana Okofo Badu Marfo, said quality teaching and learning was crucial in shaping the lives of children to enable them to play a meaningful role in society in the future.
He commended the people for their commitment and support for the project and called on the other citizens home and abroad to return with their support.
An amount of GHS39,390.00 was raised from individuals, churches, and other groups at the function towards the project, which is estimated to cost GHS 300,000.00.
Mr Collins Nsiah Junior, Assemblyman for the area said the initiative was to save the teachers from commuting long distances from Barekese, Akropong and Abuakwa to teach in the community.
He appealed to the government, philanthropists, individuals, and other organisations to come to the aid of the community for the timely completion of the project.
He mentioned that 3,500 pieces of cement blocks, two trips of sand and two packets of roofing, had been secured already for the project.
Engineer Yaw Appiah Danquah, a former Director of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, who chaired the function, supported with a cash amount of GHS 10,000.00.
