Akropong-Akuapem (E/R), Mar. 13, GNA – The Okuapehene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, has launched the 200th anniversary celebration of the Odwira Festival.
The celebration will be marked under the theme: “200 Years of Odwira: Our Heritage, Securing Our Future.”
The launching brought together all five divisional chiefs of Akuapem: The Krontihene, Adontehene, Gyasehene, Benkumhene and Ninfahene, along with the Eastern Regional Minister, Municipal and District Chief executives, queen mothers, sub-chiefs and traditional priests.
Gyasehene Osaberima Osim Kwatia II said the anniversary would promote stronger cooperation between traditional leaders and residents, alongside thanksgiving rites and the lifting of the ban on eating new yam.
He added that the celebration will also honour ancestors and deities and spiritually prepare the community for a new year in accordance with the Okuapemman calendar.
He noted that the Odwira Festival remains a major cultural event for the area, combining rituals, ceremonies and artistic displays.
Speaking on behalf of the Okuapehene, the Krontihene, Osahene Boafo Ansah II, thanked the divisional chiefs and residents for their support and commitment to unity.
He reminded the gathering that Odwira also commemorates the Akatamanso War and the resilience of their forebears.
He extended an invitation to the President, regional leaders, and Ghanaians in the Diaspora to participate in the anniversary events.
Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey said she was pleased to join the planning committee and described the 200th anniversary as a moment for reflection and renewal.
She said the festival plays a role in preserving culture and reinforcing peace and cohesion within communities.
Nana Awuku Sakyi, the Chairman of the local planning committee, announced activities lined up for the anniversary, including a health outreach programme expected to start in three weeks, targeting about 1,000 residents in Akropong, with similar exercises to follow in divisional towns.
The Okuapehene later unveiled the anniversary logo and joined dignitaries to cut a commemorative cake, officially marking the start of the 200th anniversary celebrations.
