Accra, March 10, GNA – The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority Caucus in Parliament has teased Alhaji Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, at his inauguration as Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East Constituency.
The Minority jokingly told Baba Jamal to be cautious of his own Majority National Democratic Congress (NDC) Caucus in Parliament.
First Deputy Minority Chief Whip Habib Iddrisu, the, while conveying the Caucus’ congratulatory message on the floor of Parliament, in Accra on Tuesday, alleged that members of the Majority Caucus had signed a petition to denounce confidence in Baba Jamal’s victory in the recently held by-election.
“The Majority Caucus are not your friend; they denied you. We, the Minority, are your friends, and we welcome you to this Chamber,” Mr Iddrisu, who is also the NPP MP for Tolon, stated.
He further remarked: “The President fired you as High Commissioner before your election and so within NDC, Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia is your only friend.”
Mr Iddrisu added that the outcome of the by-election showed the ruling NDC’s popularity had waned, noting that its votes reduced from 22,000 in the 2024 elections to 10,884 in less than two years.
In a swift rebuttal, Mr Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader and MP for Bawku Central, dismissed the Minority’s claims and warmly welcomed Baba Jamal to the House.
He said Baba Jamal’s presence, as a lawyer of high repute, would strengthen the Majority’s capacity in the Legislative House.
Earlier, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin had sworn Baba Jamal into office after his victory in the Ayawaso East by-election held on March 3, 2026, where he polled 10,884 votes to defeat four other contestants.
