Ewurabena Aubynn launches supporters’ union; Akweibu wins inaugural victory cup

Accra, March 15, GNA – Madam Ewurabena Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma North, has launched the Ablekuma North Supporters Union to mobilize community support for Ghana’s national teams. 

It will also promote grassroots’ sports development in the constituency. 

A statement issued by Madam Aubynn on Sunday and copied to the Ghana News Agency said the launch coincided with the maiden edition of the Ewurabena Aubynn Victory Cup, a community football match that commemorated the MP’s 2024 parliamentary election victory and deepened youth engagement through sports. 

It said, “Sports have the power to unite communities, build discipline, and nurture leadership among young people.” 

“Through this initiative, we are not only rallying support for our national teams, but also creating opportunities for young talents in Ablekuma North to shine,” it added. 

According to the statement, the Akweibu team emerged as the champion of the tournament, defeating the Otaten team in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw in regulation time.  

It noted that the event was attended by Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, who commended Madam Aubynn for the initiative. “He described the initiative as being aligned with the sports development agenda of President John Mahama,” the statement said. 

“The supporters’ union will help create a structured network of volunteers and community advocates who will champion development initiatives across the constituency,” it stated. 

The statement noted that the Ewurabena Aubynn Victory Cup is expected to become an annual event, nurturing young football talent and fostering unity, discipline, and healthy competition among the youth. 

It said the Captain of the Akweibu team, Mr. Jake Sampah, expressed gratitude to the Ablekuma North lawmaker for creating the platform and pledged the team’s continued support for future editions of the competition. 

The winning team received the tournament trophy and a cash prize, while runners-up Otaten team were also presented with a cash reward for their performance. 

It said the event brought together sports enthusiasts, youth groups, traditional leaders, and political supporters and had the Municipal Chief Executive for the Ablekuma North Assembly, Mr. Adamu Musah Kalamu, in attendance.
