Easter gradually being turned into a season of heightened social activity – Rev Nfodjoh

By Emmanuel Nyatsikor

Ho, March 30, GNA – The Reverend Bright Mawuena Nfodjoh Monday stated that the celebration of Easter, which stands at the core of Christian faith as the ultimate evidence of the salvific work of Christ was increasingly undergoing a transformation in many Ghanaian communities.

He noted that what was hitherto a sacred period marked by deep reflection on the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ was gradually being turned into a season of heightened social activity.

The Rev Nfodjoh, a Minister of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana stated this in a Pastoral letter on the relevance of Easter to the Christian community and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Ho.

He said the shift was existential and raised critical theological and pastoral questions about the preservation of the Christian identity of the season within a rapidly evolving socio-cultural landscape.

The Reverend Minister acknowledged that social activities such as festivals, cultural gatherings and traditional expressions played an indispensable role in fostering unity, identity and development within Ghanaian societies.

He however, intimated that the issue at stake was not the legitimacy of these social expressions but rather their timing and dominance over what was fundamentally a sacred Christian observance.

The Rev Nfodjoh lamented the increasing appropriation of the Easter season for boisterous social activities that overshadowed the spiritual significance of the season by communities.

“Sporting, entertainment and other social activities have become the order of the Easter season in recent times.

“Good Friday for example, a day traditionally marked by solemn reflection on the suffering and death of Christ, for instance was now used for hiking, asafo drumming and dancing, jamborees and family and clan gatherings at the expense of Good Friday Church service,” he stated.

The Rev Nfodjoh acknowledged that the Church inadvertently contributed to this shift because the places of worship lost their distinctiveness and became indistinguishable from entertainment centres, cinemas, discotheques or platforms for social display.

“If chapels are perceived as spaces lacking depth, discipline and authentic encounter with the divine, it is not surprising that individuals, especially the youth gravitated towards alternative spaces that offer more immediate forms of excitement and engagement,” he said.

The Rev Nfodjoh was of the view that the issue was not solely one of external encroachment but also internal weakening.

“The apparent hijacking of Easter may in part reflect a broader challenge of discipleship, liturgical vitality and theological communication within the church during services and beyond.

“Where the meaning of Easter is not deeply taught, experienced and embodied, it becomes vulnerable to cultural redefinition,” he stated.

The Rev Nfodjoh said the appropriate response to the shift was not to abandon traditional institutions in favour of an exclusive emphasis on the sacred Christian season of Easter.

He suggested that there should be a structured engagement between Christian leaders and traditional authorities aimed at fostering a symbolic relationship that preserved the integrity of both religious and cultural expressions without allowing one to eclipse the other.

The Rev Nfodjoh asked the Church to renew its commitment to its core mandate which included reclaiming the sacredness of its spaces, revitalizing its worship and teaching and presenting the message of Christ in ways that were both theologically sound and culturally resonant.

He stated that the future celebration of Easter as a sacred Christian observance would depend largely on the Church’s ability to both faithfully preserve its essence and creatively engage its context, whilst assisting traditional authorities to resuscitate traditional festivals.
