Duayaw-Nkwanta, (Ahafo), Feb. 12, GNA-The Ultimate Women Foundation (UWF) has lauded the exceptional roles of two distinguished women towards consolidating the gains of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s internal and the nation’s multi-party democracies.
They were the former First Lady Samira Bawumia and Mrs Christiana Agyapong, the wives of the former Vice President Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong who was also a presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, respectively.
The UWF is a women-centered Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to empowering women and girls, promoting their health, and fostering creative talents as well as empowering them to know their worth and contribute meaningfully to progress national development.
It advocates gender equality, supports the protection of women’s rights, and encourages responsible parenting to secure a better future for children too.
Dr Freda Prempeh, the founder of the UWF and former MP for Tano North Constituency in the Ahafo Region said the support the women gave to their husbands in the just ended NPP Presidential Primary remained exceptional and highly commendable.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Duayaw-Nkwanta, the Tano North constituency capital, Dr Prempeh, a former minister, stressed that the two women had shown the way, and inspired women in general to engage in active partisan politicking.
“They have really demonstrated that women irrespective of their backgrounds can go into active politics and contribute meaningfully to nurturing our fledgling multi-party democracy”, the former outspoken legislator stated.
Dr Prempeh observed that distinct roles and contributions of the two women in supporting the presidential bids of their husbands would go unnoticed and forever be remembered in the annals of the internal politics of the NPP.
“In fact, the roles they played have really empowered more women to rise up in politics”, Dr Prempeh stated, urging them “not lay back, but continue to empower women to be more assertive.
Dr Prempeh advised husbands in general to encourage and support their wives to engage in active politics and thereby contribute significantly to the decision-making process to effect social change and facilitate progressive and sustainable national development.
