Adum-Banso (W/R), Feb. 23, GNA – The Mpohor-Fiase District Assembly, in collaboration with the Ghana Integrated Iron and Steel Development Corporation (GIISDEC) and the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), has engaged residents of Adum-Banso on the prospects of an iron ore exploration project within the area.
The community engagement formed part of ongoing efforts to promote transparency, build public confidence, and ensure that residents were adequately informed about the objectives, scope, and potential benefits of the proposed exploration activities.
The meeting also provided a platform for community members to ask questions and share their concerns.
Mr Philip Oppong Amponsah, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer in Charge of Operations at the GIISDEC, during the engagement underscored the strategic importance of iron ore development to Ghana’s industrialisation agenda.
He explained that the exploration exercise was a critical step towards establishing a viable iron and steel industry, which could significantly reduce the country’s dependence on imported steel products, create employment opportunities, and stimulate local economic growth.
He assured residents that all activities would be undertaken in accordance with regulatory standards and in close consultation with the community.
Madam Sophia Aubyn, the Mpohor-Fiase District Chief Executive (DCE), reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promoted sustainable development within the district.
She noted that the collaboration between the Assembly, GIISDEC, and the Ghana Geological Survey Authority reflected a shared vision of harnessing local resources for national development, while safeguarding the interests of the people.
She encouraged residents to remain engaged and cooperative throughout the process.
Mr Jeffrey Koomson, who represented the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, conveyed the MP’s support for the project, and commended the institutions involved for prioritising stakeholder engagement.
He emphasised on the need for transparency and constant communication to ensure that the benefits of the project were felt by the host community.
Mr Frank Kwabena Bonsu, Western Regional Director of the GGSA, provided technical insight into the exploration process, and explained that geological surveys were conducted to determine the quantity and quality of mineral deposits before any large-scale development could proceed.
He assured residents that environmental considerations remained a key priority and scientific assessments would guide every stage of the project.
Nana Kwandoh Brempong III, the Chief of Adum-Banso, welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation for the consultative approach adopted by the organisers.
He urged residents to support lawful development efforts, while remaining vigilant about the protection of their lands and livelihoods.
The engagement concluded with an interactive session during which residents sought clarification on employment opportunities, environmental safeguards, and timelines for the exploration activities.
