SSA-UDS, TEWU-TUC reaffirm support for SSA-UoG industrial action

Tamale, Feb 04, GNA – The Senior Staff Association of the University for Development Studies (SSA-UDS) and and the Tertiary Education Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) have reaffirmed support for the nationwide indefinite industrial action declared by SSA-UoG.

This was contained in a solidarity message delivered by Hajia Faidatu Alhassan, Chairperson of SSA-UDS, at a press briefing in Tamale on Wednesday.

She said SSA-UDS had fully complied with and endorsed a directive issued by the national executives of SSA-UoG, TEWU-TUC and the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG), as contained in a press statement released on Tuesday, February 03, 2026.

Hajia Alhassan explained that the industrial action was triggered by the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission’s (FWSC) unilateral decision to alter the conditions of service of senior staff in public universities, particularly the withdrawal of overtime allowance and its replacement with a call-in allowance, contrary to a binding agreement signed in 2021.

She also cited government’s failure to pay outstanding salary arrears and allowances following the upgrading of the National Film and Television Institute, the Ghana Institute of Languages and the Ghana Institute of Journalism into the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC).

Other concerns, she noted, included the non-payment of five months’ Tier-Two pension contributions to pension fund managers.

Hajia Alhassan said SSA-UDS and TEWU-TUC viewed the developments as a serious threat to the welfare and living conditions of their members and called for the immediate resolution of the issues.

She reaffirmed the association’s loyalty to the decisions of the national leadership and indicated that members would remain on strike until government and the FWSC addressed the concerns raised
