Tamale, Feb 24, GNA – The NITES Group, an international information technology development organization, has engaged the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) to explore the adoption of advanced metering technology aimed at addressing electricity losses exceeding 40 per cent within its operational area.
The meeting, which took place on Monday during a working visit by the NITES Group to Tamale, focused on possible collaboration to reduce both technical and commercial losses across NEDCo’s distribution network.
The meeting brought together selected management and technical staff of NEDCo, where officials of NITES Group presented innovations designed to ensure accurate metering, enable real-time monitoring of energy flows and detect irregularities within the distribution system.
Dr Dmitar Cickovic, who led the delegation, said the technology had already been deployed across several million metering points in Europe where it recorded measurable reductions in distribution losses.
He explained that the system provided utilities with full visibility of consumption patterns and network performance, enabling early detection of leakages, meter tampering, and other anomalies while strengthening operational control.
Mr Vladimir Petrovic, a member of the delegation, noted that the solution had been tested in different regulatory environments and demonstrated strong scalability and reliability for utilities seeking to modernise infrastructure.
Mr John Okine Yamoah, Managing Director of NEDCo commended the NITES Group and said electricity losses continued to pose a major challenge to power distribution in Ghana especially in the northern sector, which affected revenue mobilization, operational efficiency and reliability of supply.
The meeting followed earlier consultations facilitated by Mr Gilbert Yelewere Meznar in partnership with AL-Sofwan Company Limited, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Sofwan Alhassan.
Mr Sofwan expressed confidence that the introduction of the technology would strengthen NEDCo’s financial position, promote fair billing, and enhance service delivery to consumers.
Officials of both organisations described the discussions as productive and expressed optimism about establishing a long-term partnership to support ongoing efforts to modernise electricity distribution, reduce losses and improve efficiency in power supply within the northern operational zone.
