Accra, Feb. 17, GNA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Sergei Berdnikov, over the unlawful publication of explicit images of Ghanaian women by a supposed Russian national.
The summons, issued on the instruction of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, was to formally convey the Government of Ghana’s strong displeasure at the conduct and to seek Russia’s cooperation in pursuing justice.
A press release by the Ministry described the alleged act as atrocious and a violation of Ghanaian law, as well as the privacy and dignity of the victims.
It said during the meeting, Ambassador Berdnikov acknowledged the seriousness of the matter, including its cybercrime implications, and expressed Russia’s willingness to cooperate with Ghana.
He noted, however, that he could not confirm the Russian nationality of the individual involved, adding that the purported name circulating in the media was not a known Russian name but rather an inappropriate or vulgar expression in the Russian language.
The Ambassador disclosed that similar activities linked to the individual had come to the attention of Russian authorities in other countries and were under investigation by Russian experts.
He pledged that the Russian Embassy in Ghana would share information to support Ghana’s efforts to apprehend the suspect and bring him to justice, despite the absence of a legally binding extradition treaty between the two countries.
The Ministry assured the public of its commitment to leveraging the cordial bilateral relations between Ghana and Russia and exploring all available international tools and remedies to ensure justice was served.
