Washington, Jan 29, (dpa/GNA) – Venezuelan opposition leader MarĂa Corina Machado, on Wednesday criticized the new leadership in Venezuela following a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“No one has faith in interim President Delcy RodrĂguez,” Machado told journalists in Washington. “Everybody knows what this regime is all about. We’re talking about criminals.”
The Trump administration is currently cooperating with RodrĂguez, who has taken over the Venezuelan leadership following the capture by the US of former leader, Nicolás Maduro.
When asked by a journalist whether she would be prepared to share power with RodrĂguez in a transitional government, Machado replied: “We are working to enable a real transition. This is not a Russia-like transition, where the mafia remains in power and ultimately the citizens suffer.”
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate said she would continue to work for real change, and not for part of the ruling apparatus to remain in power.
US President Donald Trump had previously said Machado did not have the support and respect in Venezuela needed to lead the country, and the US is currently backing RodrĂguez, who was Maduro’s vice president when he was captured by US forces during a military operation in Venezuela in early January.
Maduro has since been charged in New York with drug offences.
