Omdurman, Sudan, Jan 12, (dpa/GNA) – The Sudanese government has officially returned to the capital Khartoum, after being based in Port Sudan since the outbreak of war in April 2023.
The return is permanent, Prime Minister Kamil Idris said on Monday.
The government wants to focus on improving the living conditions and security of the people in Sudan, especially in the health and education sectors, he said.
The move indicates that life in the capital is returning closer to normal 10 months after the expulsion of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia from the city.
Several ministries have already resumed their work in Khartoum in the past three months.
According to the UN, the bloody power struggle between de facto president Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy Mohammed Hamdan Daglo has triggered the largest humanitarian crisis in the world.
Some 12 million people have been displaced by the conflict.
Displaced people are now returning to Khartoum. However, war continues to rage in other parts of the country.
Daglo’s RSF militia took El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, at the end of last year after a long siege, with numerous reports of atrocities. The RSF controls the Darfur region.
In the meantime, the fighting has shifted mainly to the Kordofan region.
Human rights groups accuse both parties to the conflict of serious crimes. The RSF is accused of massacres, sexual violence and torture of civilians.
