Berekum (Bono), Jan. 26, GNA – Mr Kwaku Kankam, the Berekum East Constituency Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged delegates to vote based on merit when they go to the polls to elect the party’s 2028 flagbearer.
The contest for the NPP Presidential Primary scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026, features five aspirants: Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President, Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Abetifi MP and former Food and Agriculture Minister, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, current Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister, Mr Kwabena Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary and Mr Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Assin Central MP.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Berekum, Mr Kankam cautioned delegates against being influenced by “financial inducements” and instead urged them to select a candidate capable of leading the party to victory in the 2028 general election.
He acknowledged that competitive party elections often come with internal conflicts but stressed that such differences should not divide the party.
Mr Kankam expressed optimism that unity within the NPP would be sustained and strengthened after the primary.
The Constituency Chairman further called on the party leadership to enforce its constitution and sanction members whose actions tarnish the party’s image, saying discipline was essential to maintain the NPP’s credibility among the electorate.
