C/R Director of CEA urges government to employ more staff to boost functional literacy

By James Esuon

Nsaba (C/R), Jan. 20, GNA – Nana Yaa Ayensu Fianya, Central Regional Director of the Complementary Education Agency (CEA), has appealed to the government to employ more staff

across all 16 regions of Ghana to enhance the implementation of functional literacy programmes.

She noted that inadequate staffing was hampering the work of the Agency, stressing that the functional literacy programme would suffer if the situation was not addressed.

The Acting Regional Director made the call at Agona Nsaba after touring Agona East, Agona West, and Gomoa Central to interact with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and their coordinating directors on ways to improve the Agency’s operations.

Nana Fianya explained that the rationale behind the tour was to acquaint herself with the prevailing conditions in the offices and find solutions to challenges confronting the Agency.

She expressed optimism that more non-literates would be assisted to read and write, while others desiring to acquire vocational and technical skills would also be supported.

Touching on the change of name of the organisation, she said Parliament passed Act 1055 in 2020, making CEA an autonomous body responsible for the provision and administration of functional literacy.

However, she lamented that logistics and funding had not been forthcoming as expected.

Currently, the CEA is organising classes for 2026 BECE candidates in prisons, while poultry farmers and other informal sector workers are being trained to access formal education and skills development, Nana Fianya added.

She said workers at the various offices in the region were eager to support people in the informal sector, but stressed that well-resourced offices were vital to enable the Agency to organise more classes.

The Acting Director has already toured Upper Denkyira, Gomoa East, Awutu Senya East and West, Twifo Praso, and other areas to interact with workers and MMDCEs to find lasting solutions to the challenges.

She commended the Central Regional MMDCEs for their willingness to provide funds and logistics to support the Agency’s operations.

Mr Samuel Oscar Mensah, Agona District Chief Executive, assured that the Assemblies would give the necessary support to the CEA to help enroll more people in line with the government’s reset agenda

He emphasised that the CEA must function effectively in all Assemblies to ensure the successful implementation of President John Mahama’s policies and programmes.
